The Service

What roof repairs is,
and who it's for.

A roof repair should end the problem, not schedule the next one. That means finding the actual source of the leak or failure, not just the visible symptom, and fixing it with materials that match the age and construction of your roof — reclaimed Cotswold stone tiles, natural slate, code-4 lead, hand-formed detailing where it matters.

White Horse Roofing carries out repairs across pitched and flat roofs, chimneys, valleys, flashings and gutters. Every job starts with a proper inspection, is quoted at a fixed price in writing, and is completed by our own tradespeople — never sub-contracted out.

Who it's for

Homeowners with a slipped, cracked or missing tile; anyone who has spotted damp patches on a ceiling, staining around a chimney breast, moss growing through the underside of a felt roof, or gutters overflowing in heavy rain. Landlords and letting agents who need a fast, documented make-safe. Homebuyers who want the roof properly assessed before exchange.

When it's needed

As soon as you see the symptom. Leaks rarely announce themselves on the day they start — by the time water reaches a ceiling, it has usually been tracking through the roof structure for weeks or months. The sooner the source is found, the smaller the repair and the lower the cost.

Why professional

Roof access is the single most common cause of serious accidents in home DIY. Beyond safety, an untrained eye misdirects the fix — patching the visible stain while the real breach continues to feed water into the timbers. A qualified roofer diagnoses the path of the water, not just its exit point, and repairs to the standard of the surrounding roof so the fix disappears rather than announcing itself.

What Happens If Ignored

The cost of leaving it
until next winter.

Left alone, a small breach becomes a structural problem. Water tracks along rafters and joists, saturates insulation, rots timbers, blackens plaster, spoils decoration and — in the worst cases — reaches the wiring. A £250 tile repair becomes a £2,500 ceiling replacement becomes a £15,000 re-roof with strip-out and structural repairs. The cost curve is steep and it only goes one way.

Common problems we see

  • Slipped, cracked or missing tiles and slates
  • Chimney flashing failures and lead splits
  • Valley leaks and worn-out mortar bedding
  • Storm damage — displaced ridges, torn felt, blown-off tiles

Mistakes to avoid

  • ×Assuming the leak is directly above the stain — water can track several metres before dropping
  • ×Sealing a lead flashing with mastic instead of dressing new lead — a fix that fails in one winter
  • ×Using cement mortar on a heritage roof where lime mortar is required, causing tiles to crack as the roof moves

In Detail

The specifics —
materials, methods, situations.

Materials we work with

Natural roofing slate — Welsh, Spanish and Brazilian — matched to the age and gauge of the existing roof. Cotswold stone tiles, both reclaimed and new-cut, bedded in traditional lime mortar where the property demands it. Clay plain tiles, concrete interlocking tiles, and single-lap tiles for more modern properties. Code-4 and code-5 lead for flashings, soakers, valleys and step-and-cover detailing around chimneys.

For flat-roof repairs we work with EPDM rubber, high-performance felt and GRP fibreglass — selected on the merits of the roof, not the convenience of the fitter.

Common repair situations

Storm-damaged roofs after high winds — displaced ridges, lifted tiles, torn felt underlays and stripped lead. We attend for a survey, carry out temporary make-safes to stop further ingress, and issue a fixed-price quote for the permanent works.

Age-related failure — bedding mortar crumbling on ridges and verges, nail sickness pulling slates loose, felt underlay perishing at the eaves. Often solvable with targeted repairs before a full re-roof becomes necessary.

Historic botched work — cement smears over lead flashings, roofing screws through slates, patch felt over live valleys. We strip out the failed work and rebuild the detail properly.

Residential and commercial

The majority of our repair work is for residential customers — from small terraces to large heritage properties. We also carry out commercial roof repairs for landlords, small offices and outbuildings across Oxfordshire, Berkshire and the Cotswolds. Documentation is the same either way: written survey, fixed-price quote, before-and-after photographs and a written workmanship warranty.

FAQ

Everything homeowners
ask us about roof repairs.

Something not covered? Call 07522 468971 and we'll answer it directly.

How much does a roof repair cost?+

Straightforward repairs — a slipped tile, a small flashing repair, a section of ridge re-bedded — typically fall between £180 and £650 plus VAT. Larger repairs involving scaffold, valley reforming or extensive lead replacement are quoted individually after survey. Every price is fixed in writing before we start.

How quickly can you attend?+

For most enquiries we can get a surveyor to you the same day or the next working day. In emergencies we prioritise make-safe visits so the property is watertight before the permanent repair is scheduled.

Will you match my existing tiles or slates?+

Yes — we hold and source reclaimed Cotswold stone tiles and natural slate specifically so repairs blend into the original roof rather than stand out. On heritage properties this is often the difference between a repair that is invisible and one that visibly patches the roof.

How long will a repair last?+

A correctly diagnosed and properly executed repair using matching materials should last as long as the surrounding roof — often 20 to 50 years for slate or stone, 15 to 25 for concrete tiles. We back this with a written workmanship guarantee.

Do I need scaffolding for a small repair?+

Not always. Many single-tile and flashing repairs can be done safely from ladder or a mobile tower. Larger repairs or work near the ridge usually require scaffold — which is included in the fixed quote so you see the cost upfront.

Do you offer emergency roof repairs call-outs?+

Yes. For storm damage, active leaks and make-safes across Oxfordshire, Berkshire and the Cotswolds, call us and we will aim to get a surveyor to you the same day. Emergency temporary works can usually be carried out on the first visit so the property is watertight before a permanent repair is scheduled.

Is the quote free?+

Yes for owner-occupied properties. For homes you have not yet bought there is a £100 pre-purchase survey fee — fully deducted from the final quote if you go ahead. Every quote is fixed price, in writing, itemised and never a day rate.

What guarantee do you offer?+

Full re-roofs carry a 15-year workmanship guarantee. Flat roofs carry a 10-year workmanship guarantee. Repairs are covered by a written workmanship warranty appropriate to the scope. All work is backed by £1M public liability cover.

How do payments work?+

A deposit secures your slot in the diary. The balance is paid by bank transfer on completion. On larger projects we offer sensible stage payments so you are never paying ahead of the work delivered.

Which areas do you cover?+

Oxfordshire, Berkshire and the Cotswolds — including Oxford, Abingdon, Didcot, Wantage, Witney, Reading, Newbury, Cirencester and Faringdon. If you are close to the edge of that radius, call us — we can usually help.
